The New York State Senate Work-Based Learning Program offers practical work experience alongside professionals in either the Senate administrative offices or print production facilities. Fall Assistants are placed within the State Senate’s fiscal, media, and events departments. Spring Assistants work within the Senate’s production department. Assistants are assigned to work a predetermined number of hours in a department aligned with the student’s experience, abilities, and interests. Apply early. Spring Assistants learn practical work experience alongside professionals in the Senate administrative offices supporting its 63 Senators and 1,100 employees. Assistants are placed within the State Senate’s fiscal, media, and events departments and generally will work in the fields of business administration or mass communication.
Senate Fiscal Office (Business Administration)
The Senate Fiscal Office comprises the Payroll and Accounts Payable offices. Assistants will learn all stages of processing payroll, expenses, general accounting practices, and mandatory reporting.
Senate Media Services (Mass Communication)
Senate Media Services consists of Photography and Video and offers a wide variety of production tools and resources to help Senators communicate with constituents. Media Services also records, live streams, and archives all legislative proceedings including Session, public hearings, and committee meetings, both live and virtual.
Fall Assistants work hands-on in every aspect of print production, from the early stages of design and planning to the technical stages of manufacturing and off-press processing. Senate Production is a full-scale, state of the art printing facility. It produces and distributes materials to millions of constituents through New York State. Apply early.
