Guilty or Innocent? N.Y. Trial Purgatory: The Right To A Speedy Trial Is Being Routinely Denied

"All Americans have a constitutional right to a speedy trial. But in New York State, that right is denied under a labyrinthine “ready rule,” enacted in 1972. 

I, along with Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry, have introduced a measure called Kalief’s Law to reform how the speedy trial clock is measured. It would require prosecutors to certify they are ready by offering supporting facts to pause the clock, and place more accountability, and oversight, with the court."
