Statement from Senator Mannion on Increased Vaccine Allotment for New Yorkers with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

GEDDES – Senator John W. Mannion (D-Geddes,) chair of the Senate Committee on Disabilities, today released the following statement on the decision to increase vaccine allotment for New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities:

“Increased vaccine allotment for New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities and more time to administer them are the positive outcomes that I have been fighting for since I took office.

These New Yorkers are at much greater risk from COVID-19 and must be prioritized for vaccines, even in an environment where supplies are limited. Due to challenges unique to this population, it is often more complex to travel and safely staff vaccine appointments. Because of this obstacle, some vaccines slated for I/DD individuals were being redistributed. Now, residential facilities will have the additional time that is required without the risk of losing a dosage.

I applaud Governor Cuomo, DOH, and OPWDD for listening to the valid concerns of I/DD families and caregivers and following the science.”
