Senator Martucci Statement on Passage of S1765 Legislation Co-Sponsored by Martucci Aims to Save Goshen Secure Center

“Today, in bipartisan fashion, the New York State Senate passed S1765 – an act that will require legislative approval for the closure of Goshen Secure Center and other OCFS and OMH facilities. Four such closures were proposed in the Governor’s Executive Budget.

“I proudly co-sponsored this legislation and, as the Ranking Member of the Committee on Disabilities, I helped advance this bill to the floor in partnership with my colleague and Committee Chair, Senator John Mannion. Notably, the passage of this bill comes on the heels of a joint press conference I held last week with my colleague Senator Skoufis, also a co-sponsor of this legislation, at the OCFS Goshen Secure Center in my district.

“Together with members and leadership of CSEA Southern Region 3 and PEF, we made it clear that the premature closure of these facilities will be detrimental to hardworking families, the local economy, and, most importantly, the young residents of the facilities who are working to turn their lives around. I am thrilled that the full Senate has heard us and moved to pass this legislation, which will ensure the lives of workers and their families as well as the residents are no longer hanging in the balance.

“I urge my colleagues in the Assembly to take up this legislation and both houses to stop this closure in the final budget so we can deliver a victory for local jobs, public safety, and common sense.”

Mike Martucci is serving his first term as the Senator for the 42nd NYS Senate District which comprises all of Sullivan County and parts of Orange, Ulster, and Delaware counties. He is the Ranking Member of the Senate Committees on Disabilities and Small Business, Commerce and Economic Development.
