In honor of September as Alzheimer Awareness Month, Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. invites the community to a dynamic and interactive educational event aimed at unraveling the complexities of Alzheimer’s Disease, a condition that touches the lives of millions and their caregivers.
Senator Addabbo is hosting this special event on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the One Stop Community Center / Richmond Hill Block Association, located at 110-08 Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica.
An estimated 6.7 million Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's dementia today. This number could grow to 13.8 million by 2060, according to the National Institutes of Health.
This event promises to be an enlightening experience, featuring immersive activities led by the Alzheimer’s Association. Participants will have the unique opportunity to engage in demonstrations that simulate what it feels like to live with Alzheimer’s. Plus, there will be brain-stimulating activities, energizing movement sessions, and discussions on cultivating healthy habits.
While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, experts believe there are ways to slow its progression and enhance the quality of life for those affected. Through medication, exercise, a balanced diet, and brain stimulation, individuals can take proactive steps toward better health, according to the World Health Organization.
The event will also feature Dr. Morteza Modaber, a distinguished neurologist and the Director of Neurology at both Jamaica Hospital and Flushing Hospital Medical Center. With his extensive training in neurology from the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and a medical degree from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Modaber will provide invaluable medical insights to attendees.
“Alzheimer’s Disease affects not just those diagnosed, but also their families and caregivers,” Addabbo said. “It’s vital that we come together as a community to raise awareness, share resources, and support one another. This event is an opportunity to learn, connect, and empower so we can make a positive impact in the lives of those affected by this challenging disease.”
