BILL NUMBER:A7463A TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to allowing the use of rifles for hunting big game in a certain portion of the county of Chautauqua; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To allow hunters in a certain portion of the county of Chautauqua to hunt bear and deer by the use of a rifle. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 11-0907 of the Environmental Conservation Law is amended to allow the hunting of bear and deer by the use of rifles in certain portions of Chautauqua County as bounded by specific roads. JUSTIFICATION: In several areas of the State, sportsmen are allowed to hunt bear and deer with rifles. This change in law would allow the use of rifles in specific rural towns of Chautauqua County making it consistent with the hunting practices of adjoining Cattaraugus County. This legislation has strong support from the sportsmen community in Chautauqua. Expanding the use of hunting with rifles in Chautauqua Coun- ty will also contribute to deer population control. Deer damage has been costly to the farms and agribusinesses of rural Chautauqua County. PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: This is a new bill.
