BILL NUMBER: S139 TITLE OF BILL : An act to exempt veterans of World War II from any additional fees when they order license plates stating "World War II Veteran" PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : To allow World War II Veterans an exemption from any additional costs for vanity plates. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Section 1. The department of motor vehicles shall establish that there shall be no charge for the issuance or renewal of a license plate stating "World War II Veteran", upon payment of the regular registration fee prescribed by section 401 of the vehicle and traffic law, when such plate is being issued upon proof, satisfactory to the commissioner of motor vehicles, that the applicant is a veteran of World War II. JUSTIFICATION : This act will provide that all New York State residents who are veterans of World War II shall be exempt from the additional or "vanity plate" charge for World War II New York State license plates in recognition of their invaluable service to our country and invaluable sacrifice to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

SAMPSON -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Veterans, Homeland Securi- ty and Military Affairs AN ACT to exempt veterans of World War II from any additional fees when they order license plates stating "World War II Veteran" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The department of motor vehicles shall establish that there shall be no charge for the issuance or renewal of a license plate stat- ing "World War II Veteran", upon payment of the regular registration fee prescribed by section 401 of the vehicle and traffic law, when such plate is being issued upon proof, satisfactory to the commissioner of motor vehicles, that the applicant is a veteran of World War II. S 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred twentieth day after it shall have become a law; provided, however, that effective immediate- ly, the addition, amendment and/or repeal of any rules and regulations necessary for the implementation of this act on its effective date are authorized and directed to be made and completed on or before such effective date.
