BILL NUMBER: S4270 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the public health law, in relation to requiring the commissioner of health to develop and implement a system for uniform patient safety PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : To develop and implement a system for color-coding standardization of medical safety conditions for use in all health care facilities. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : The public health law is amended by adding a new Section 22. JUSTIFICATION : In today's healthcare environment, healthcare professionals very often work in more than one facility. Healthcare facilities use color-coding to classify and identify the special needs of a resident/patient. A color-coding system allows staff to memorize a color and match its function. A problem develops when employees work at different facilities, each which follow a unique color-coding system within the facility. Establishing a standardized color-coding system would allow for a smooth transition from facility to facility and enhance the opportunity for patient safety.
