BILL NUMBER: S4469 TITLE OF BILL : An act in relation to exempting certain ambulance services from the payment of tolls PURPOSE : The purpose of the legislation is to exempt both commercial and voluntary ambulance services from paying tolls on the New York State Thruway. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Section one of the legislation provides that the payment of tolls on any highway, bridge, tunnel or other toll road in the state shall not apply to a commercial ambulance service or a voluntary ambulance service, regardless of whether or not they are responding to an emergency. EXISTING LAW : Under current law, an ambulance service is exempt from tolls only when traveling with its lights and sirens on during an emergency operation. JUSTIFICATION : In many parts of the state, the New York State Thruway is the fastest and most direct route for ambulances to travel not only to emergencies

SEWARD -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT in relation to exempting certain ambulance services from the payment of tolls THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the payment of tolls on any highway, bridge, tunnel or other toll road within the state shall not apply to an ambulance service as defined in subdivision two of section three thousand one of the public health law or a voluntary ambulance service as defined in subdivision three of such section, regardless of whether or not such vehicles are responding to an emergency. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD11197-01-9
