BILL NUMBER:S1691 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the transportation law, in relation to providing free public transportation for senior citizens PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To provide all senior citizens who reside in New York State with the privilege of having free transportation. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Add section 15-d to the transportation law. JUSTIFICATION: The purpose of this bill is to give seniors a break from their expenses. Seniors are retired citizens with fixed incomes and most of them cannot afford the extra expense of public transportation on a daily basis. SAMPSON -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the transportation law, in relation to providing free public transportation for senior citizens THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The transportation law is amended by adding a new section 15-d to read as follows: S 15-D. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS. SENIOR CITIZENS SHALL RECEIVE USE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FREE OF CHARGE. S 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after it shall have become a law, provided, however, that the commissioner of transportation shall promulgate any rules and regulations necessary for the implementation of this act on or before such effective date.
