BILL NUMBER:S2232 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to providing that the first two days of Passover and Good Friday be designated school holidays SUMMARY: This bill amends section 2554 to the Education Law by adding a new subdivision 28 to provide that a special provision be made, in the City of New York, for the first two days of Passover and be designated as school holidays. Law by adding be made, in the Good Friday to JUSTIFICATION: This bill would give those students and faculty the chance to observe Passover and Good Friday without being adversely affected by missing school days. There is also a practical consideration since the school system would stand to lose significant state financial remuneration because of the extensive absenteeism that would Occur on those days. This bill would also ensure that the school systems' instructive value Would not be curtailed due to faculty absenteeism.

KRUGER -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to providing that the first two days of Passover and Good Friday be designated school holi- days THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 2554 of the education law is amended by adding a new subdivision 28 to read as follows: 28. TO PROVIDE THAT, IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK, SPECIAL PROVISION BE MADE FOR THE OBSERVANCE OF THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF PASSOVER AND GOOD FRIDAY SUCH THAT THESE DAYS BE DESIGNATED AS SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD07058-01-1
