BILL NUMBER:S2901 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the elimination of any fees associated with the distinctive license plates for purple heart recipients PURPOSE: To eliminate any fees associated with first-time and renewal issuances of Purple Heart license plates. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 - Amends subdivision 3 of section 404-e of the Vehicle and Traffic Law to eliminate fees associated with the Purple Heart license plate. Section 2- Effective date. JUSTIFICATION: Recipients of the Purple Heart have put their lives on the line for the United States of America and have shed blood in the defense of this nation. Each and every Purple Heart recipient is an American hero and deserves the respect of all Americans. This legislation seeks to eliminate the fees associated with the Purple

DeFRANCISCO, BONACIC, GRIFFO, JOHNSON, LARKIN, MAZIARZ, NOZZOLIO, RANZENHOFER, SEWARD -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Trans- portation AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the elimi- nation of any fees associated with the distinctive license plates for purple heart recipients THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subdivision 3 of section 404-e of the vehicle and traffic law, as amended by chapter 486 of the laws of 1996, is amended to read as follows: 3. A distinctive plate issued pursuant to this section shall be issued in the same manner as other number plates [upon payment of the regular registration fee prescribed by section four hundred one of this arti- cle], provided, however, that no REGISTRATION FEE OR service charge shall be charged for such plate. FURTHERMORE, UPON THE ISSUANCE OF A DISTINCTIVE PLATE PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION, SUCH PURPLE HEART RECIPIENT SHALL BE EXEMPT FROM THE PAYMENT OF ANY FEES RELATING TO THE REGISTRA- TION OR RENEWAL THEREOF AS PRESCRIBED BY SECTION FOUR HUNDRED ONE OF THIS ARTICLE.
