BILL NUMBER:S3221 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to establishing a geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents prep course for New York school districts that have less than sixty-five percent of their students passing the geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents PURPOSE: The proposed legislation will establish a geometry and algebra IT/trigonometry regents prep course to prepare students for the mathematics regents by reviewing previous regents exams and materials to be utilized by schools with an average of less than sixty-percent of its students passing their geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents exam. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISION: Amends the education law by adding a new section 816 with, essentially 3 new provisions: 1. Along with the cooperation of the board of regents, the commissioner will be authorized and directed to establish and develop a program for the preparation of the geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents examination. 2. The program can be instituted by any school district that wants to provide those students that fall within sixty-fix percentile an opportunity to achieve a passing grade on the geometry and algebra

PARKER -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to establishing a geom- etry and algebra II/trigonometry regents prep course for New York school districts that have less than sixty-five percent of their students passing the geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Legislative findings. The legislature hereby finds that it is necessary to increase the percentage of students passing the geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents in New York school districts. The geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents examination for high school students is one of five major regents examinations required for high school students to obtain a general high school diploma. The legislature further finds that over twenty counties have averaged less than sixty- five percent of their students passing the geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents examination. The legislature therefore enacts this legislation establishing a geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents prep course to prepare students for the mathematics regents by reviewing previous regents exams and materials. S 2. The education law is amended by adding a new section 816 to read as follows: S 816. GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA II/TRIGONOMETRY REGENTS PREP COURSE. 1. THE COMMISSIONER, IN COOPERATION WITH THE BOARD OF REGENTS, IS AUTHOR- IZED AND DIRECTED TO ESTABLISH AND DEVELOP A PROGRAM FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA II/TRIGONOMETRY REGENTS EXAMINATION. SUCH PROGRAM MAY BE INSTITUTED BY ANY SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKING TO PROVIDE ITS SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACHIEVE A PASSING GRADE ON THE GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA II/TRIGONOMETRY REGENTS EXAMINATION. 2. THE BOARD OF REGENTS SHALL ESTABLISH CRITERIA TO BE USED BY SCHOOL DISTRICTS PARTICIPATING IN SUCH PROGRAM, INCLUDING THE REVIEW AND TEST- EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted.
