BILL NUMBER:S6136 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to licensure fees for seniors and veterans PURPOSE: To waive drivers license renewal fees for New York State's seniors and veterans. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section one amends the vehicle and traffic law to waive drivers license renewal fees for New York State's seniors and veterans. Section two establishes the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: As New York State continues to recover and rebuild our economy, we must continue to work to identify areas where we can provide financial relief for those who need and deserve it most. In particular, our aging and vulnerable senior population, as well as our proud veterans who have served our country and state with honor and distinction. Many seniors are living on fixed incomes which haven't kept pace with normal costs of living. Among them are many veterans who represent the backbone of our communities. Younger veterans returning from active duty face numerous obstacles in rebuilding their own lives, namely

KENNEDY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to licensure fees for seniors and veterans THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Paragraph (c) of subdivision 2 of section 503 of the vehi- cle and traffic law is amended by adding a new subparagraph (v) to read as follows: (V) THE RENEWAL FEE FOR A LICENSE FOR ANY PERSON WHO IS (A) SIXTY-TWO YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER; OR (B) A UNITED STATES VETERAN SHALL BE WAIVED. THE TERM VETERAN SHALL MEAN A PERSON, MALE OR FEMALE, WHO HAS SERVED IN THE ACTIVE MILITARY OR NAVAL SERVICE OF THE UNITED STATES DURING A WAR IN WHICH THE UNITED STATES ENGAGED, AND WHO HAS BEEN RELEASED FROM SUCH SERVICE OTHERWISE THAN BY DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE, OR WHO HAS BEEN FURLOUGHED TO THE RESERVE.
