BILL NUMBER:S6463 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to requiring certain public schools in any city with a population over one million to offer Halal food options during lunch PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This bill would require a city having over one million inhabitants to require that each of its public schools offer Halal food options during lunch. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 1. Amends the education law by adding a new section, 915-a Requires any city having a population of over one million residents to offer Halal food options in public schools during lunch. EXISTING LAW: None JUSTIFICATION: Due to the growing Muslim population, this bill seeks to accommodate to the dietary obligations of Muslim students within the NYC education

DIAZ -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring certain public schools in any city with a population over one million to offer Halal food options during lunch THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 915-a to read as follows: S 915-A. HALAL FOOD OPTIONS. IN ANY CITY HAVING OVER ONE MILLION INHABITANTS, EACH PUBLIC SCHOOL SHALL OFFER HALAL FOOD OPTIONS DURING LUNCH. S 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred twentieth day after it shall have become a law. Effective immediately, the addition, amend- ment and/or repeal of any rules or regulations necessary for the imple- mentation of this act on its effective date is authorized to be made on or before such date.
