BILL NUMBER:S7754 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to creating advanced placement coursework opportunities PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This bill would expand access to advanced placement courses and subsidize advanced placement exam fees. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 1 requires the commissioner to develop a grant program to assist local school districts with limited advanced placement offerings in establishing or expanding advanced placement courses. It also requires the commissioner to develop a mechanism to subsidize the portion of the advanced placement exam fee that is not currently funded by a federal program. Section 2 lists the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: Research shows that students who take advanced placement courses in high school are more likely than their peers to earn college degrees in four years, thus saving them money and time. By expanding access to these courses, and lessening the cost for financially eligible students who take advanced placement exams, the state can improve educational and economic opportunity for students who currently have limited access to such courses. PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: None.
