  Affairs

AN  ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to authorizing the divi-
  sion of  veterans'  affairs  to  provide  for  the  interment  of  the
  unclaimed remains of veterans

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. Section 353 of the executive law is amended by adding a new
subdivision 12-b to read as follows:
  12-B. TO PROVIDE, IN COOPERATION WITH VETERANS SERVICE  ORGANIZATIONS,
FOR  THE  INTERMENT  OF  THE  UNCLAIMED REMAINS OF VETERANS.   THE STATE
DIRECTOR SHALL CONSULT WITH VETERANS SERVICE  ORGANIZATIONS  TO  ANALYZE
THE  SCOPE  OF  THE  ISSUE  OF  UNCLAIMED  REMAINS  OF VETERANS. FOR THE
PURPOSES OF THIS SUBDIVISION, "UNCLAIMED REMAINS  OF  A  VETERAN"  SHALL
MEAN  THE  REMAINS  OF A VETERAN THAT ARE CONSIDERED UNCLAIMED UNDER THE
LAWS OF THIS STATE AND/OR ANY OTHER STATE OF THE UNITED STATES.
  S 2. This act shall take effect on the first of January next  succeed-
ing the date on which it shall have become a law.
