AN ACT to amend the insurance  law,  in  relation  to  mandatory  health
  insurance coverage for certified registered nurse anesthetists provid-
  ing anesthesia services

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. Subsection (i) of section 3216  of  the  insurance  law  is
amended by adding a new paragraph 30 to read as follows:
  (30)  EVERY POLICY WHICH PROVIDES FOR COVERAGE FOR ANESTHESIA SERVICES
SHALL INCLUDE COVERAGE FOR ANESTHESIA SERVICES PROVIDED BY AN  INDEPEND-
ENTLY  EMPLOYED CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIST. THE TERM "CERTI-
FIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIST" AS USED IN THIS PARAGRAPH SHALL  MEAN
A  PERSON  WHO  HAS SATISFACTORILY COMPLETED EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION FOR
THE PRACTICE OF NURSE ANESTHESIA IN A PROGRAM ACCREDITED BY  A  NATIONAL
ACCREDITING BODY RECOGNIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH OR DETERMINED BY
THE  DEPARTMENT  OF  HEALTH  TO  BE  THE EQUIVALENT AND WHO IS CURRENTLY
CERTIFIED BY A NATIONAL CERTIFYING BODY RECOGNIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT  OF
HEALTH.
  S 2. Subsection (l) of section 3221 of the insurance law is amended by
adding a new paragraph 19 to read as follows:
  (19)  EVERY POLICY WHICH PROVIDES FOR COVERAGE FOR ANESTHESIA SERVICES
SHALL INCLUDE COVERAGE FOR ANESTHESIA SERVICES PROVIDED BY AN  INDEPEND-
ENTLY  EMPLOYED CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIST. THE TERM "CERTI-
FIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIST" AS USED IN THIS PARAGRAPH SHALL  MEAN
A  PERSON  WHO  HAS SATISFACTORILY COMPLETED EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION FOR
