BILL NUMBER:S969 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to custom plates for veterans PURPOSE: This legislation waives the $28 fee for any kind of veterans custom plate, excluding plates with vanity lettering. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends the vehicle and traffic law by adding new section 404-x, which states that the fee for custom veterans license plates without vanity lettering will be waivered for veterans. The waiver will not apply to custom veterans license plates with vanity lettering. Section 2 effective date. JUSTIFICATION: Veterans have served this country in such a heroic manner that can never be repaid. They risked their lives for the sake of their country, and they deserve whatever benefits we can offer them. Veterans deserve the right to commemorable license plates free of charge.

LIBOUS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to custom plates for veterans THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The vehicle and traffic law is amended by adding a new section 404-x to read as follows: S 404-X. CUSTOM PLATES FOR VETERANS, WAIVER OF FEE. NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF LAW TO THE CONTRARY, THE TWENTY-EIGHT DOLLAR FEE FOR CUSTOM PLATES IS HEREBY WAIVED IN THE CASE OF AN APPLICATION THERE- FOR BY ANY VETERAN OF SERVICE IN THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES. THIS WAIVER APPLIES ONLY TO THE FEE FOR THE CUSTOM PLATE AND DOES NOT APPLY TO THE VETERAN CUSTOM PLATE WITH VANITY LETTERING. S 2. This act shall take effect on the first of May next succeeding the date on which it shall have become a law.
