BILL NUMBER:S2820 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to requiring police officers to be retrained in cardiopulmonary resusci- tation every two years PURPOSE: To require all police officers are trained in the adminis- tration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Adds a new section of law to the general munici- pal law; section 208-h. JUSTIFICATION: In response to the tragic death of Briana Ojeda, it is imperative that all police officers are adequately trained in the admin- istration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This easy to learn procedure has been proven to save lives in emergency situations and could have helped save the life of Briana Ojeda. This bill will require every police officer in New York State to be retrained and tested in CPR. By requiring that all police officers are know how to administer CPR we can ensure that those in need will be saved in the future. ADAMS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Local Government AN ACT to amend the general municipal law, in relation to requiring police officers to be retrained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation every two years THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Short title. This act shall be known and may be cited as "Briana's Law". S 2. The general municipal law is amended by adding a new section 208-h to read as follows: S 208-H. BIENNIAL POLICE OFFICER CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION RETRAINING. EVERY POLICE OFFICER SHALL, EVERY TWO YEARS BE: 1. RETRAINED IN CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION AS DEFINED BY SUBDIVI- SION SIX OF SECTION SIX HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE OF THE GENERAL BUSINESS LAW; AND 2. REQUIRED TO DEMONSTRATE THE SATISFACTORY COMPLETION OF TRAINING IN CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION. S 3. This act shall take effect on the sixtieth day after it shall have become a law.
