HAWLEY, FINCH, NOJAY, GOODELL, OAKS, McDONOUGH, BLANKENBUSH, McLAUGHLIN, RAIA, GIGLIO -- Multi-Sponsored by -- M. of A. THIELE -- read once and referred to the Committee on Ways and Means AN ACT to amend the judiciary law, in relation to compensation of certain district attorneys; and making an appropriation therefor THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 183-a of the judiciary law, as amended by chapter 1049 of the laws of 1974, is amended to read as follows: S 183-a. Compensation of certain district attorneys. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the district attorney of each county having a population of more than five hundred thousand according to the last federal census, exclusive of the counties of New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens and Richmond, shall receive an annual salary equivalent to that of a justice of the state supreme court together with such additional compensation as the legislative body of such county may provide by local law. Further, that the district attorney of each county having a popu- lation of more than one hundred thousand and less than five hundred thousand according to the last federal census, exclusive of the county of Richmond, and the district attorney of any county, the board of supervisors of which has designated such office as a full-time position pursuant to subdivision eight of section seven hundred of the county law, shall receive an annual salary equivalent to that of county judge in the county in which the district attorney is elected or appointed, together with such additional compensation as the legislative body of such county may provide by local law. THE STATE SHALL REIMBURSE THE COUNTIES FOR THE ENTIRE COST OF ANY INCREASE IN THE ANNUAL SALARY OF A DISTRICT ATTORNEY DUE TO AN INCREASE IN THE ANNUAL SALARY OF A JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OR A COUNTY JUDGE. S 2. The sum of one million six hundred thousand dollars ($1,600,000) is hereby appropriated out of any moneys in the general fund of the state treasury to the credit of the state purposes account not otherwise appropriated, for reimbursement to counties resulting from the increase in salaries decided upon by the New York state commission on legisla- tive, judicial & executive compensation. S 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
