BILL NUMBER: S6750 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the state law, in relation to making sweet corn the state vegetable PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : To establish sweet corn as the official vegetable of New York State. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Amends the State law by adding a new section 89 designating sweet corn as the official vegetable of the state of New York. JUSTIFICATION : According to the 2012 Agricultural Census, New York State sells $68.4 million worth of sweet corn per year, not including the ancillary revenue generated from markets for things like popcorn and oils that are derived from the kernels. This ranks New York State 4th in the nation in terms of the crop's value, and therefore, the State should recognize it as a component of our overall ranking in the U.S. as an agricultural powerhouse.
