BILL NUMBER: S4624 SPONSOR: SKOUFIS TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the judiciary law, in relation to exempting active volunteer firefighters from jury duty PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This bill would exempt active volunteer firefighters from having to serve in a jury. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Sections 1: Amends judiciary law by adding a new section, 512. Subsection 1 of section 512 provides for active volunteer firefighters, as defined by volunteer firefighters benefit law, to be exempt from jury duty. Subsection 2 of section 512 requires the chief administrator of the courts to create a form to be used by any qualified person to apply for the exemption.

SKOUFIS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Judiciary AN ACT to amend the judiciary law, in relation to exempting active volunteer firefighters from jury duty THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The judiciary law is amended by adding a new section 512 to read as follows: § 512. ACTIVE VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS EXEMPT FROM JURY DUTY. 1. UPON CLAIMING EXEMPTION THEREFROM, A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER, AS DEFINED IN SECTION THREE OF THE VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS' BENEFIT LAW, SHALL BE EXEMPT FROM JURY DUTY. 2. THE CHIEF ADMINISTRATOR OF THE COURTS SHALL PRESCRIBE A FORM TO BE USED THEREFOR. ANY QUALIFIED PERSON MAY FILE SUCH FORM WITH THE APPRO- PRIATE COMMISSIONER OF JURORS WHO SHALL THEREUPON EXEMPT SUCH PERSON FROM JURY DUTY. SUCH EXEMPTION SHALL REMAIN VALID AS LONG AS SUCH PERSON REMAINS A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER. § 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred twentieth day after it shall have become a law. Effective immediately, the addition, amend- ment and/or repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for the implemen- tation of this act on its effective date are authorized to be made and completed on or before such effective date.
