BILL NUMBER: S4829 SPONSOR: BIAGGI TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the mental hygiene law, in relation to ensuring that the office of mental health and the office for people with developmental disabilities provide materials to individuals in different languages PURPOSE: To require the Office for Mental Health and the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities to have materials printed in English as well as other languages. BIAGGI -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Mental Health AN ACT to amend the mental hygiene law, in relation to ensuring that the office of mental health and the office for people with developmental disabilities provide materials to individuals in different languages THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 7.07 of the mental hygiene law is amended by adding a new subdivision (i) to read as follows: (I) THE OFFICE SHALL PROVIDE ALL MATERIALS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DOCUMENTS, INSTRUCTIONS, APPLICATIONS AND FORMS, IN ENGLISH AND THE SIX MOST COMMON NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGES SPOKEN BY INDIVIDUALS WITH LIMIT- ED-ENGLISH PROFICIENCY IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK, BASED ON UNITED STATES CENSUS DATA. § 2. Section 13.07 of the mental hygiene law is amended by adding a new subdivision (f) to read as follows: (F) THE OFFICE SHALL PROVIDE ALL MATERIALS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DOCUMENTS, INSTRUCTIONS, APPLICATIONS AND FORMS, IN ENGLISH AND THE SIX MOST COMMON NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGES SPOKEN BY INDIVIDUALS WITH LIMIT- ED-ENGLISH PROFICIENCY IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK, BASED ON UNITED STATES CENSUS DATA. § 3.
