BILL NUMBER: S7570 SPONSOR: STEC TITLE OF BILL: An act to create a commission to plan for the celebration in the year 2025 of New York state's canal system and the bicentennial of the open- ing of the Erie Canal; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof PURPOSE: To create a committee to plan for a bicentennial celebration of New York's canal system. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1- Creates the "Erie Canal Bicentennial Commission" Section 2 - Outlines the membership of the commission and designates appointment powers.

S T A T E O F N E W Y O R K ________________________________________________________________________ 7570 2021-2022 Regular Sessions I N S E N A T E December 3, 2021 ___________ Introduced by Sen. STEC -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to create a commission to plan for the celebration in the year 2025 of New York state's canal system and the bicentennial of the opening of the Erie Canal; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. A temporary commission to be known as the "Erie Canal Bicentennial Commission," hereafter referred to as the "commission," is hereby created to arrange preliminary details, adopt plans, and devise ways and means for a statewide celebration in 2025 of the bicentennial of the opening of the Erie Canal. Such plans shall include a celebration of New York's canal network, including the Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga and Seneca canals, and its cultural, economic and historic import. § 2. (a) The commission shall consist of 11 members to be appointed as follows: two members appointed by the governor; two members appointed by the temporary president of the senate; two members appointed by the speaker of the assembly; one member appointed by the minority leader of the senate; one member appointed by the minority leader of the assembly; the chief executive officer of the New York State Canal Corporation or his or her designated representative; the commissioner of parks, recre- ation and historic preservation or his or her designated representative; and the commissioner of education or his or her designated represen- tative. The commission shall appoint a chair. Vacancies in membership shall be filled in the same manner provided for the original appoint- ments or designations. (b) The members of the commission shall receive no compensation for their services but shall be allowed their actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of their duties pursuant to this act.
