   printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules
 
 AN ACT to allow Benjamin Doty to sit in on the civil  service  exam  for
   the position of Columbia County Sheriff
 
   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

   Section 1. Notwithstanding the provisions of section 58 of  the  civil
 service  law  or  any  other  provision of law to the contrary, Benjamin
 Doty, who has been continuously employed by the village of Millerton, in
 the county of Dutchess, as a full-time police officer, and in the  town-
 ship of Germantown, in the county of Columbia, as a full-time Patrolman,
 shall  be eligible to take the competitive civil service examination for
 the position of Sheriff and shall, contingent upon  his  score  on  such
 examination,  be eligible to be placed on the eligible list for appoint-
 ment as a full-time Sheriff.
   § 2. Benjamin Doty shall otherwise be subject to the merit and fitness
 provisions of the civil service law applicable to full-time Sheriffs.
   § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
