S T A T E O F N E W Y O R K ________________________________________________________________________ 10163 I N A S S E M B L Y May 10, 2024 ___________ Introduced by COMMITTEE ON RULES -- (at request of M. of A. Blumencranz) -- read once and referred to the Committee on Higher Education AN ACT to amend the public health law and the education law, in relation to expanding current educational programming and outreach about the need for and importance of organ and tissue donations THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Short title. This act shall be known and may be cited the "New York saves lives act". § 2. Subdivision 1 of section 207 of the public health law is amended by adding a new paragraph (s) read as follows: (S) ANY RESIDENT OF THIS STATE SIXTEEN YEARS AND OLDER MAY REGISTER TO SAVE LIVES BY SIGNING UP AS AN ORGAN, EYE AND TISSUE DONOR THROUGH THE NEW YORK STATE DONATE LIFE REGISTRY. § 3. The education law is amended by adding a new section 209-b to read as follows: § 209-B. NEW YORK STATE DONATE LIFE REGISTRY OPTION ON APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSION TO THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK. 1. ALL APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSION TO THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK SHALL CONTAIN A SPACE FOR THE APPLICANT TO REGISTER IN THE NEW YORK STATE DONATE LIFE REGISTRY FOR ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATIONS ESTABLISHED PURSUANT TO SECTION FORTY- THREE HUNDRED TEN OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH LAW. 2. THE CHANCELLOR OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK SHALL ANNUALLY REPORT THE NUMBER OF APPLICANTS THAT ELECTED TO REGISTER IN THE NEW YORK STATE DONATE LIFE REGISTRY TO THE GOVERNOR; THE TEMPORARY PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE; THE SPEAKER OF THE ASSEMBLY; THE MINORITY LEADER OF THE SENATE; AND THE MINORITY LEADER OF THE ASSEMBLY. § 4. The education law is amended by adding a new section 6235 to read as follows: § 6235. NEW YORK STATE DONATE LIFE REGISTRY OPTION ON APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSION TO THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK. 1. ALL APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSION TO THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK SHALL CONTAIN A SPACE FOR THE APPLICANT TO REGISTER IN THE NEW YORK STATE DONATE LIFE REGISTRY FOR EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted.
