S T A T E O F N E W Y O R K ________________________________________________________________________ 6181 2023-2024 Regular Sessions I N A S S E M B L Y April 3, 2023 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. CURRAN -- read once and referred to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to the creation of a peer to peer mentoring program THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 305 of the education law is amended by adding a new subdivision 60 to read as follows: 60. THE COMMISSIONER SHALL REQUIRE ALL ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS TO CREATE PEER TO PEER MENTORING PROGRAMS RELATING TO THE IMPLI- CATIONS OF DRUG ABUSE. RESOURCES, INFORMATION AND COUNSELING RELATED TO DRUG AND SUBSTANCE USE MUST BE PROVIDED TO THE MENTORING PROGRAMS BY EACH SCHOOL. SUCH RESOURCES, INFORMATION AND COUNSELING MAY BE PROVIDED BY OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS AND MUST BE AGE-APPROPRIATE FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN. § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
