S T A T E O F N E W Y O R K ________________________________________________________________________ 6370 2023-2024 Regular Sessions I N A S S E M B L Y April 5, 2023 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. WEPRIN -- read once and referred to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to bulletproof glass on police vehicles THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 375 of the vehicle and traffic law is amended by adding a new subdivision 55 to read as follows: 55. A. ON AND AFTER JANUARY FIRST, TWO THOUSAND TWENTY-FIVE, ANY POLICE VEHICLE PURCHASED BY THE STATE, A PUBLIC AUTHORITY, OR ANY MUNI- CIPALITY SHALL BE EQUIPPED WITH BULLETPROOF OR BULLET RESISTANT GLASS. B. THE SUPERINTENDENT OR CHIEF OF POLICE, OR OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SUPERVISION AND MAINTENANCE OF A FLEET OF POLICE VEHICLES, SHALL CAUSE ANY POLICE VEHICLE THAT IS IN USE AS OF THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS SUBDIVISION TO BE RETROFITTED WITH BULLETPROOF OR BULLET RESISTANT GLASS. SUCH PERSON MAY CAUSE SUCH GLASS REPLACEMENT TO BE PERFORMED ON A STAGGERED BASIS SO THAT ALL POLICE VEHICLES ARE NOT OUT OF SERVICE AT THE SAME TIME. C. THE COMMISSIONER OF THE DIVISION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SERVICES, IN CONSULTATION WITH THE COMMISSIONER OF MOTOR VEHICLES, SHALL PROMULGATE RULES AND REGULATIONS DETERMINING THE SPECIFICATIONS THAT MUST BE MET TO CONSIDER ANY GLASS AS "BULLETPROOF" OR "BULLET RESISTANT". § 2.
