S T A T E O F N E W Y O R K ________________________________________________________________________ 9371 I N A S S E M B L Y March 6, 2024 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. SOLAGES, VANEL -- read once and referred to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring domestic violence awareness curriculum or instruction THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 804-e to read as follows: § 804-E. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS CURRICULUM OR INSTRUCTION. 1. THE COMMISSIONER, IN CONSULTATION WITH THE STATE OFFICE FOR THE PREVENTION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, THE OFFICE OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES, AND ANY OTHER APPROPRIATE AGENCY, SHALL ESTABLISH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS CURRICULUM OR INSTRUCTION FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THE CONTENTS MAY BE VARIED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF PARTICULAR SCHOOL DISTRICTS, OR PORTIONS THEREOF, AND NEED NOT BE UNIFORM THROUGHOUT THE STATE. THE CONTENT SHALL BE AGE APPROPRIATE AND SHALL BE DEVELOPED ACCORDING TO THE NEEDS AND ABILITIES OF PUPILS AT SUCCESSIVE GRADE LEVELS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE SKILLS, INFORMATION, AND SUPPORT TO AID IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS. 2. SCHOOLS MAY INCLUDE THE ABOVE MATERIALS AS A COMPONENT OF ITS HEALTH CURRICULUM OR ANY OTHER WAY THE SCHOOL DEEMS APPROPRIATE. § 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2025.
