COMMEMORATING the 102nd Anniversary of Brookdale
Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, on
April 11, 2023

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
institutions which have faithfully served the health needs of the
community and its citizens with diligence and compassionate commitment;
and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 102nd Anniversary of Brookdale Hospital Medical Center
in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday, April 11, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Brookdale Hospital Medical Center opened its doors to the
public for the first time on April 11, 1921, with one building housing
75 beds between the neighborhoods of Brownsville, East New York, and
Canarsie; and

WHEREAS, Originally called the Brownsville and East New York
Hospital, it was renamed Beth-El Hospital in 1932; at this time, the
hospital, under the directorship of Jacob Rutstein, greatly expanded its
facilities; and

WHEREAS, In 1963, the hospital was renamed Brookdale Hospital, and
in 1971, it became the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center; in 1993,
Brookdale Hospital Medical Center opened the first designated long-term
AIDS center in Brooklyn, which was later named the Treatment for Life
Center; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center is one of
Brooklyn's largest voluntary nonprofit teaching hospitals and a regional
tertiary care center, serving most of Eastern Brooklyn; it provides
24-hour emergency services, numerous outpatient programs, and long-term
specialty care; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Brookdale Hospital Medical Center has one of
Brooklyn's largest full-service emergency departments and one of 15
Level 1 Trauma Centers in New York City; it is also one of 14 New York
State DOH-designated Stroke Centers in Brooklyn, and provides numerous
outpatient Ambulatory care services in both on-campus and off-site
facilities; and

WHEREAS, The success of Brookdale Hospital Medical Center is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its administration, and staff,
whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an
impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising
standard of excellence in all endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Venerable and trustworthy institutions, tending to the
needs of the community and its citizenry, represent the threads from
which the fabric of society is woven; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to recognize the benevolent
good works of health care institutions, sharing the pride of its history
and accomplishments, and anticipating its future of continued growth in
quality and personalized care; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
extend congratulations and just tribute to Brookdale Hospital Medical
Center, commemorating its 102nd Anniversary of service and care on
behalf of the Brooklyn, New York community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center.
