COMMEMORATING Landmarks Society of Greater Utica
upon the occasion of celebrating the 50th
Anniversary of its State Charter on October 25, 2024
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate Landmarks Society of Greater Utica upon the occasion of
celebrating the 50th Anniversary of its State Charter on Friday, October
25, 2024; and
WHEREAS, On October 25, 1974, the State of New York chartered
Landmarks Society of Greater Utica as a non-profit educational
organization with the purpose of preserving the historic buildings and
districts of the Utica community; and
WHEREAS, Characteristic of every significant architectural style,
spanning from the early 1800s to the present, Utica has been the epitome
of structural diversity, exhibiting the character and aesthetics of the
homes and other structures in its neighborhoods and communities and
contributing to the economy, culture, and quality of life of the
residents; and
WHEREAS, Landmarks Society of Greater Utica's mission is saving the
past by protecting the future; the all-volunteer group represents all
ages, professions, and walks of life, sharing the same fervor for
historic buildings and landmarks; this association of like-minded
individuals promotes the rich cultural and architectural history of
Utica by enlightening the public sector; and
WHEREAS, Annually, Landmarks Society of Greater Utica celebrates the
city's rich history with numerous events, including Springtime Tea and
bus tours; the funding for various projects is derived from donations at
these affairs; and
WHEREAS, The President of Landmarks Society of Greater Utica, Steve
Grant, a lifelong resident of New Hartford, New York, joined the
organization in 2008; his passion for local history and desire to
preserve it spurred him to unite with his fellow members; a few years
later, he was invited to become a Board Member; and
WHEREAS, The volunteers of Landmarks Society of Greater Utica have
enthusiastically participated in various projects, including the
transformation of Union Station into a regional transportation and
municipal center, the conservation and reinstallation of the Swan
Memorial Fountain, the reopening of the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric
Center's "Old Main" building as the Records Archive for the New York
State Office of Mental Health, the maintenance of the architectural
integrity of the Rutger-Steuben Historic District, and the restoration
of Rutger Park; and
WHEREAS, The success of Landmarks Society of Greater Utica is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its members, whose involvement is,
and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an
unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in
all endeavors; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Landmarks Society of Greater Utica
and to honor its members, past and present, who have labored so
conscientiously to secure and improve the quality of life for the
citizens of the community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Landmarks Society of Greater Utica.
