CONGRATULATING New York Liberty's Sabrina Ionescu
and Breanna Stewart upon the occasion of capturing
the Gold Medal as members of the United States
Women's Basketball Team at the Paris 2024 Olympic
Games

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to extend its full
recognition and grateful tribute to the athletes of New York State who
have dedicated their purposeful lives to athletic achievement and
proudly represented their great State and Nation in international sports
competition; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to join the New York
Liberty community in honoring Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, young
women of great skill, personal courage and unparalleled dedication,
whose character and athletic achievements are world-renowned and
personify the highest ideals of the American spirit and Olympic Games
competition; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate New York Liberty's Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart upon
the occasion of capturing the Gold Medal as members of the United States
Women's Basketball Team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games; and

WHEREAS, On Sunday, August 11, 2024, the US Women's Basketball Team
defeated France to close out the Paris Olympics, 67-66, extending its
dynasty of eight consecutive Gold Medals and a 61-game winning streak;
and

WHEREAS, Hailing from Syracuse, New York, Breanna Stewart had an
average of 16.3 points per game in this year's Olympics; she was the
first overall pick in the 2016 WNBA draft, and joined the New York
Liberty on February 1, 2023; and

WHEREAS, In addition to this Gold Medal win at the Paris 2024
Olympic Games, Breanna Stewart won a Gold Medal at both the 2016 and
2020 Olympics; she also won Gold Medal at the 2014, 2018, and 2022
Basketball World Cups; and

WHEREAS, Sabrina Ionescu averaged 5.5 points per game in this year's
Olympics; she was the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, and has
been a member of the New York Liberty since April 17, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, Sabrina Ionescu won Gold Medals at the 2022
Basketball World Cup, 2019 Pan American Games, 2014 FIBA U-17 World Cup,
and the 2013 FIBA Americas U-16 Championship; and

WHEREAS, True role models, Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart have
brought honor to their families, coaches and community; their character
and achievements stand as a sterling example and inspiration to all who
aspire to such extraordinary success; and

WHEREAS, Many will only dream of competing in the Olympics; these
talented athletes from the great State of New York, through their hard
work and tenacious spirit, have made that vision a reality, and have
proudly represented their country in competition among the world's
finest athletes, an honor which will solidify their incredible legacy as
Olympic Champions; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate New York Liberty's Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart upon
the occasion of capturing the Gold Medal in Women's Basketball at the
Paris 2024 Olympic Games; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart.
