CONGRATULATING Robert J. McCarthy upon the
occasion of his retirement after a 41 year career as
a distinguished reporter for The Buffalo News
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalists who have diligently and consistently, year
after year, recorded the history of their communities and brought local
news and news across the globe to their readers; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Robert J. McCarthy upon the occasion of his retirement
after a
41 year career as a distinguished reporter for The Buffalo News; and
WHEREAS, A native of Schenectady, New York, Robert J. McCarthy,
affectionately known to many as Bob, earned his bachelor's degree from
St. Bonaventure University in 1976; after graduating, he went to work
for the Olean Times Herald; and
WHEREAS, In 1982, Robert J. McCarthy joined the staff of The Buffalo
Evening News as a general assignment reporter; later, he worked police,
state government and transportation beats before becoming a political
reporter in 1992, the position from which he officially retired in 2023;
and
WHEREAS, Since then, Robert J. McCarthy has covered all major
elections in Western New York and New York State as a whole, including
14 national conventions; and
WHEREAS, Robert J. McCarthy has been the recipient of numerous
awards and accolades for his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his
profession including the 2006 New York State Publishers Association
First Place Award with a colleague for stories on "Irregularities in the
State Liquor Authority" and a 2002 series of articles on how State
Supreme Court candidates are chosen was nominated by The News for a
Pulitzer Prize; and
WHEREAS, Robert J. McCarthy was also named one of New York's 10 most
influential political journalists by Brill's Content magazine, and
serves as a panelist for various local and statewide debates; and
WHEREAS, Sincerely loved and greatly respected by all those with
whom he worked, Robert J. McCarthy will be remembered for his honesty,
integrity, keen sense of duty and ability to show a unique grasp of
human problems in his official acts; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Robert J. McCarthy upon the occasion of his retirement
after a 41 year career as a distinguished reporter for The Buffalo News,
and to wish him well in all his future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Robert J. McCarthy.
