COMMEMORATING the 70th Anniversary of the North
Shore Synagogue, and paying tribute to this year's
honorees
WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in New York State is
greatly enriched by its religious institutions and the faithful and
generous service of those who devote themselves to endeavors of family,
faith, and community; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend institutions of such magnanimous conduct and bearing which
demonstrate a deep and continuing concern for others, and in so doing,
inspire others to do the same; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the North Shore Synagogue, and to
pay tribute to this year's honorees, on Saturday, May 13, 2023; and
WHEREAS, North Shore Synagogue is a vibrant Reform congregation of
over 500 families offering a diversity of spiritual, educational,
family, mitzvah and social opportunities for its members and the
community; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, North Shore Synagogue joins
with its members in building a community where the practice of Reform
Judaism enriches and uplifts lives with understanding, warmth,
friendship and meaning; and
WHEREAS, Though its members are drawn to the synagogue for various
reasons - spiritual, social, educational and charitable - North Shore
Synagogue seeks to forge a common bond of commitment to Jewish heritage,
tradition and people, and affirm the freedom to express these shared
values in creative and individualistic ways; and
WHEREAS, For seven decades, North Shore Synagogue has served the
communities of Syosset, Woodbury, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Jericho,
Oyster Bay, Muttontown, Brookville, East Norwich, Hicksville,
Farmingdale, Melville, Glen Head, Cold Spring Harbor, Laurel Hollow, and
many others on Long Island; and
WHEREAS, This year's distinguished honorees who have been
congregants of North Shore Synagogue for more than 50 years include:
Audrey Barnett, Conrad Berenson, Arthur and Barbara Berkowitz, Phyllis
Birnbaum, Eli Bluestone, Ellen Boles, Michael and Rosalie Cantor,
Phyllis Charash, Judie Chessin, Sheila Doischen, Melvin and Norma
Drossman, Barbara Elis, Beverly Elson, Stephen and Susan Feldman, Ira
Friedman, Sue Gallen, Carolyn Ganz, Harold and Arlene Gold, Gerald and
Barbara Goldstein, Susan Gould, Phyllis Handler, Jack Hayne, Harold and
Barbara Hershman, Linda Karpe, Dolores Kemp, Alan and Naomi Kramer,
Jerome and Beverly Levitan, Leonard and Anita Lustbader, Milton and
Joyce Miller, Linda Neuwirth, Nathan Pepper, Phyllis Picard, Alan
Protzel, Ingeborg Rabinowitz, Estelle Rehfield, Bess Reiner, Ed and
Doris Rosenfeld, David Rosenthal, Iris Smith, Marilyn Solomon, Kenneth
and Ann Spole, Cynthia Sternberg, and Eileen Zanar; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Rabbi Jaimee Shalhevet, North
Shore Synagogue now stands on the threshold of tomorrow, prepared to
meet the challenges of the coming decades, while retaining that
spiritual resolve which has so characterized its glorious past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the North Shore Synagogue, and to
pay tribute to this year's honorees; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Rabbi Jaimee Shalhevet, North Shore Synagogue; and the
aforementioned honorees.
