MOURNING the death of Amleto Giarolo, beloved
baseball coach, devoted family man, and
distinguished member of his community
WHEREAS, There are certain outstanding members of our community who,
through their selfless commitment and dedication, have served to better
the quality of life in our community and have had a measurable positive
impact on the lives of its residents; Amleto Giarolo was one such
individual; and
WHEREAS, It is with profound sorrow and deep regret that this
Legislative Body records the passing of Amleto Giarolo, noting the
significance of his purposeful life and accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Amleto "Mel" Giarolo of Croton, New York, died on Saturday,
April 21, 2023, at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, Born to Leone and Chiara (Tumba) Giarolo on October 18,
1934, in Tarrytown, New York, Amleto Giarolo proudly served his country
as a member of the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, With a sincere passion for the game of baseball, upon the
completion of his military service, Amleto Giarolo played for the
Lexington Indians, an Independent minor league baseball team in the
Western Carolina League, where he honed his skills, finishing the 1960
season with a .307 batting average and an impressive .455 on-base
percentage; and
WHEREAS, After his Minor League career, Amleto Giarolo attended
Ithaca College under the GI Bill where he earned a degree in teaching;
and
WHEREAS, Amleto Giarolo went on to spend the majority of his
illustrious career teaching Physical Education in the Lakeland School
District, where he again followed his love of baseball and began
coaching the varsity team at Croton Harmon High School; and
WHEREAS, In this role, Amleto Giarolo led his team to a New York
State Championship in 1981; he had a truly special relationship with his
players, many of whom he remained close friends with for the rest of his
life; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his love of baseball, Amleto Giarolo enjoyed
traveling and spending time with his friends and family; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Croton, Amleto Giarolo was a fixture
in the local community, and could often be found fishing or grabbing a
coffee and a newspaper in the local stores; and
WHEREAS, Amleto Giarolo is survived by his fiance, Connie Corry; a
sister, Amelia "May" Capitanio; three children, Christopher (Maureen),
Jill (Sean), and John; two grandchildren, Francesca and Aaron; and
several nieces and nephews; he is predeceased by his wife Brenda and his
brother Victor; and
WHEREAS, Amleto Giarolo's infinite selflessness and benevolence will
shine on through his family's vivid and happy memories; his insight and
strength will forever serve as a beacon of love, light and hope to the
countless lives he touched; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Amleto Giarolo leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all who
were privileged to have known and loved such an amazing man; he will be
deeply missed and truly merits the grateful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death Amleto Giarolo, and to express its deepest condolences
to his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Amleto Giarolo.
