COMMEMORATING the 45th Anniversary of the Elmont
Memorial High School Model United Nations program

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and pay
just tribute to those organizations whose commitment and dedication
contributed to neighborhood empowerment, community enrichment, and the
entire State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the Elmont Memorial High School
Model United Nations program; and

WHEREAS, In 1978, Elmont Model United Nations was established and
began their journey through competition when Lee Marcus accepted the
invitation of the North American Invitational Model United Nations
(NAIMUN) to attend their conference, which hosted many of the most
acclaimed high schools in the country; and

WHEREAS, By 1983, delegates from the Elmont Memorial High School
team won the highest honor at the NAIMUN conference as Best Delegation,
marking the beginning of a legacy of success for the Model United
Nations programs at Elmont Memorial High School and within the Sewanhaka
Central High School District; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, Elmont Memorial High School has won
countless awards at Model United Nations conferences across the country,
including at Harvard University, Rutgers University, University of
Chicago, Columbia University, University of California at Berkeley, and
the National High School Model United Nations Conference; and

WHEREAS, The Elmont delegation won international acclaim with their
performances at The Hague International Model United Nations
conferences; the team won Outstanding Delegation in 1992, establishing
Sewanhaka School District as one of the top Model United Nations
programs in the world; and

WHEREAS, This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Lee Marcus
Invitational Sewanhaka Intra-District Model United Nations Conference,
hosted annually by each of the five district Model United Nations
programs on a rotating basis; in addition, it is the 20th anniversary of
the Lee Marcus Model United Nations Program in the six elementary
schools in the district, founded by Lee Marcus alongside Superintendent
Al Harper, bringing students together to discuss and debate world issues
and learn lessons on compromise, public speaking, negotiation, and
leadership; and

WHEREAS, Lee Marcus has been a distinguished member of the community
as a dedicated teacher, advisor, coach, academic, author, and lecturer
who served as Social Studies Chairperson at New Hyde Park Memorial High
School and District Coordinator of Social Studies for the five component
schools in the Sewanhaka Central High School District; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Elmont Memorial High School Model United
Nations program is in direct correlation to the efforts of its founder,
Lee Marcus, and dedicated members, whose involvement are, and always
have been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the Elmont Memorial High School
Model United Nations program; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Elmont Memorial High School Model United Nations
program and Founder, Lee Marcus.
