HONORING Undersheriff Richard Castle upon the
occasion of his retirement after 35 years of
distinguished service to the Saratoga County
Sheriff's Office

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers who devote themselves to public
service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in providing for the
care and welfare of the citizens of their communities and this great
Empire State; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Undersheriff
Richard Castle upon the occasion of his retirement after 35 years of
distinguished service to the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, to be
celebrated on April 21, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Richard Castle, born and raised in Waterford, New York, is
a graduate of LaSalle Institute, Empire State College, and the Zone 5
Law Enforcement Academy; and

WHEREAS, His career commencing in Public Safety at 19 years old,
Richard Castle began as a dispatcher for the Waterford Police Department
in Waterford, New York; and

WHEREAS, Richard Castle, under New York's Saratoga County Sheriff,
James D. Bowen, was promoted to Deputy Sheriff in 1991, Patrol Sergeant
in 2000, and Patrol Lieutenant in 2008; and

WHEREAS, During his tenure, Richard Castle, headed the Saratoga
County Sheriff's Department Traffic Safety Unit, served as lead
investigator and instructor for the Collision Reconstruction Unit, and
was Systems Administrator for the Department of Information Technology;
and

WHEREAS, In 2014, Richard Castle, was promoted to Chief Deputy by
Saratoga County's Sheriff, Michael Zurlo, and was sworn in on March 11,
2016, as Sheriff Zurlo's Undersheriff; and

WHEREAS, A long-time resident of Halfmoon, New York, Richard Castle
served on the Advisory Board for the Zone 5 Law Enforcement Board in
Schenectady, New York; he is also a licensed commercial aircraft pilot,
a past officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and an emergency
medical technician; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
dedicated public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the
preservation of order and the protection of others are worthy and due
full praise for their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be
it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Undersheriff Richard Castle upon the occasion of his retirement

after 35 years of distinguished service to the Saratoga County Sheriff's
Office; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Richard Castle.
