MOURNING the death of Dr. Arnold E. Elman,
dedicated teacher, meritorious veteran, and
distinguished member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic leadership
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Arnold E. Elman of Clifton Park, New York, passed away
at his home on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, Arnold E. Elman was born on March 30, 1933, to Annabelle
and Abraham Elman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; as a young child, he
and his family moved to New York City; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan,
Arnold E. Elman attended the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy of Long Island
University, Oneonta State Teachers College, and The State College for
Teachers at Albany, where he received his bachelor's degree in English
and his master's degree in secondary education; and
WHEREAS, At the State College for Teachers at Albany, Arnold E.
Elman met the love of his life, the former Toby Helen Scher, and after
marrying, they moved to Long Island where he taught until 1968; and
WHEREAS, Arnold E. Elman proudly served his country as a member of
the 3rd Infantry Division of the United States Army, stationed in both
Georgia and Germany; and
WHEREAS, Following his military service, Arnold E. Elman received
his doctorate degree from the University at Albany and served as the
superintendent of schools in Coventry, Connecticut, and later, in
Ellenville, New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Arnold E. Elman served in his role as superintendent of
schools in Ellenville until his retirement in 1989; shortly thereafter,
he and his wife moved to Clifton Park, New York; and
WHEREAS, In retirement, Dr. Arnold E. Elman served as an emergency
medical technician with the Ballston Lake Emergency Squad, President of
the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library Board and Southern Adirondack Library
System, and trustee for various local organizations; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Arnold E. Elman had many passions and interests
including the sciences, ancient geography, classical music, poetry, and
the study of modern languages; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Arnold E. Elman is survived by his loving wife of over
66 years, Toby; two daughters, Abbie Van Wely and Sara Whiting; one son,
Eric Elman; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; as well as
numerous colleagues and friends who will long cherish his memory; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Arnold E. Elman leaves behind an inspirational and
noteworthy legacy as an educator, military serviceman, superintendent,
community member, and loving family member that will endure the passage
of time; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Dr. Arnold E. Elman, and to express its deepest
gratitude for his service to our country, state and communities; and be
it further
RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Dr. Arnold E. Elman.
