CONGRATULATING the Corning High School Boys Cross
Country team upon the occasion of capturing the
NYSPHSAA Boys Class A Cross Country Championship on
November 12, 2022
WHEREAS, Individual and team championships are highly sought after
in high school sports; this Legislative Body commends rare athletic
achievements and pays special recognition to those who pursue such
excellence and become examples for the youth of this great Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition helps to enhance both the moral and
physical development of young athletes, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the importance of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, and developing a sense of fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate the
Corning High School Boys Cross Country team upon the occasion of
capturing the NYSPHSAA Boys Class A Cross Country Championship on
Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School in
Verona, New York; and
WHEREAS, To the praise and applause of their excited fans, the
Corning High School Boys Cross Country team captured the NYSPHAA
championship title in the Boys Class A 5000 Meter Race; and
WHEREAS, In addition to this monumental win, the Corning High School
Boys Cross Country team won the New York State Class A Cross Country
Team Championship with a score of 60; and
WHEREAS, The Corning High School Boys Cross Country team's amazing
performance and first place win at the NIKE New York Regional Country
Championship led to them qualifying for the NIKE National Cross Country
Championship in Portland, Oregon held on December 3, 2022; they ended
their season of hard work by earning the title of 10th in the Nation;
and
WHEREAS, The talented athletes who make up the Corning High School
Boys Cross Country team include: Ashton Bange, Gabe Cornfield, Tevin
McLaren, DJ Cornfield, Marcus Homa, Joshua Beres, and Jaxyn Mahoney; and
WHEREAS, In a sport such as long distance running, which demands
stamina, speed and determination, Head Coach Ray Lawson, Assistant Coach
Andrew Cartwright, and Volunteer Thomas Ketchum worked hard to hone the
skills of these champions; teaching these outstanding athletes lessons
which will prove invaluable both on and off the track; and
WHEREAS, Proudly donning the school's colors of black and gold, the
team's family, friends, and the community at large loyally and
enthusiastically supported the Corning High School Boys Cross Country
team throughout their journey as they ended the season with an
impressive overall record; and
WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride
and accomplishment, the Corning High School Boys Cross Country team has
clearly made a contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a
tradition of their school; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the Corning High School Boys Cross Country team upon the
occasion of capturing the NYSPHSAA Boys Class A Cross Country
Championship on November 12, 2022; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Corning High School Boys Cross Country team, Head
Coach Ray Lawson, Assistant Coach Andrew Cartwright, and Volunteer
Thomas Ketchum.
