CONGRATULATING Dr. Alan S. Chartock upon the
occasion of his retirement after 44 years of
distinguished service as CEO and President of WAMC
Northeast Public Radio

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
those individuals whose professional lives serve to enhance the stature
of the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Dr. Alan S. Chartock upon the occasion of his retirement
after 44 years of distinguished service as CEO and President of WAMC
Northeast Public Radio; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alan S. Chartock graduated from Hunter College with a
bachelor's degree in political science before earning a master's degree
from American Public University and a Ph.D. from New York University;
and

WHEREAS, Following his graduation from New York University, Dr. Alan
S. Chartock began a career in academia, notably serving as a professor
of political science at SUNY New Paltz and the University at Albany from
1970-2004, where today, he serves as Professor Emeritus; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alan S. Chartock founded and became the publisher of
the Legislative Gazette in 1978, which provided detailed coverage of New
York State government through a partnership with the Digital Media and
Journalism Department at SUNY New Paltz, which served to prepare student
journalists to provide fair and objective news coverage to the
citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Since 1981, Dr. Alan S. Chartock's leadership has
transformed WAMC Northeast Public Radio from a single station struggling
to survive to a thriving multi-station media organization that is heard
throughout not only New York State, but in surrounding states in the
northeast United States; and

WHEREAS, Under Dr. Alan S. Chartock's leadership at WAMC, several
popular programs were created, including "The Capitol Connection", "The
Media Project", "The Congressional Corner", and "The Roundtable", to
which New Yorkers from around the state tuned in to hear Dr. Chartock's
analysis of current events and conversations with prominent leaders,
including several New York State Governors; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alan S. Chartock's commitment to free speech, the arts,
and community engagement inspired him to lead the effort to create The
Linda, WAMC's performing arts studio, which serves as a live performance
venue for the organization, bringing its listeners concerts, lectures,
film presentations and other programming of value to the listening
community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize Dr. Alan S. Chartock for his distinguished legacy of
excellence in journalism, public radio, and defense of free speech over
the course of his 44 years leading WAMC Northeast Public Radio; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Alan S. Chartock.
