COMMENDING the five members from the Town of
Carmel Police Department in their heroic efforts in
saving the life of an eight-year-old child
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote
themselves to public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence
in providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their
communities and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the five
members from the Town of Carmel Police Department in their heroic
efforts in saving the life of an eight-year-old child; and
WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 4:37 p.m., Town of Carmel
Police Department units were dispatched along with Mahopac Volunteer
Fire Department and Amulunz medic units to Odyssey Gymnastics at 288
State Route 6, for a report of an eight-year-old child who was not
breathing; and
WHEREAS, Within two minutes, Officer Thomas Eagan arrived on the
scene and with other first responders, Sergeant Laura Whitten, Officer
Michelle Yeager, Officer Brian Detz, and Detective Daniel Shea, took
over lifesaving measures from the gym owner Mircea Bors, and good
Samaritans, Laura Spallina, Judith Schoen, and Karen Tubman, including
the application of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED); Officer
Eagon advised dispatch that his AED was advising to deliver a shock,
which was done immediately; and
WHEREAS, After delivering the shock, Officer Thomas Eagan, Sergeant
Laura Whitten, Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Rivera
continued CPR compressions and provided artificial respirations with a
bag valve mask while Ambulunz medics and EMTs intubated and provided
intravenous medications; and
WHEREAS, Shortly thereafter, Mahopac Ambulance arrived on scene and
transported the child to Westchester Medical Center under the escort of
Carmel Police with assistance from Yorktown Police Department,
Westchester County Police Department, New York State Troopers, and the
Town of Mount Pleasant Police Department; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
dedicated public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the
preservation of order and the protection of others are worthy and due
full praise for their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the five members from the Town of Carmel Police Department in
their heroic efforts in saving the life of an eight-year-old child; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Officer Thomas Eagan, Sergeant Laura Whitten, Officer
Michelle Yeager, Officer Brian Detz, and Detective Daniel Shea.
