BILL NUMBER: S2242 SPONSOR: WEIK TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "9-11 Fallen Firefighter Memorial High- way" PURPOSE: To designate a portion of the Long Island Expressway as the 9-11 Fallen Firefighter Memorial Highway SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 adds a new section 344-m to the highway law by designating then area between exits 59 and 61 on the Long Island Expressway as the "9-11 Fallen Firefighter Memorial Highway." Section 2 provides that the naming in section 1 shall be ceremonial in nature and shall not change the official name of the highway.

WEIK -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "9-11 Fallen Firefighter Memorial Highway" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-o to read as follows: § 344-O. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS "9-11 FALLEN FIREFIGHTER MEMORIAL HIGHWAY." ALL THAT PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM CONSTITUTING THE LONG ISLAND EXPRESSWAY BETWEEN EXIT 59 AND EXIT 61, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "9-11 FALLEN FIRE- FIGHTER MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act. § 3.
