BILL NUMBER: S372 SPONSOR: PARKER TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to providing secondary school pupils and adults in career education programs access to programs/courses sufficient to comprise a career major in electric vehi- cle maintenance and repair PURPOSE: This legislation amends the education law to create course material pertinent to the development of a career major in electrical vehicle maintenance and repair. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends the education law by adding section 4602-A environ- mental conservation law's subdivision 1 and subdivision 9 Subsection 1 of section 4602-A sets forth the appropriate definitions.

PARKER -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to providing secondary school pupils and adults in career education programs access to programs/courses sufficient to comprise a career major in electric vehicle maintenance and repair THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 4602-a to read as follows: § 4602-A. CAREER MAJOR IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR. 1. FOR PURPOSES OF THIS SECTION: (A) "CAREER MAJOR" SHALL MEAN A NUMBER OF COURSES IN A CAREER EDUCA- TION PROGRAM WHICH TOGETHER PROVIDE A STUDENT WITH GREATER TECHNICAL SKILL AND A STRONG ACADEMIC CORE AND ARE PRIMARILY DESIGNED FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT INITIALLY COLLEGE BOUND AND SHALL PROVIDE THEM WITH ALTERNATIVES TO IMMEDIATE ENTRANCE INTO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. A CAREER MAJOR SHALL BE LINKED TO POSTSECONDARY OPTIONS AND SHALL PREPARE STUDENTS TO PURSUE EITHER A DEGREE OR CERTIFICATION FROM A POSTSECONDARY INSTITUTION, AN INDUSTRY- BASED TRAINING OR CERTIFICATION, AN APPRENTICESHIP, THE MILITARY, OR IMMEDIATE ENTRANCE INTO A CAREER FIELD, PURSUANT TO POLICIES ADOPTED BY THE COMMISSIONER; AND (B) "ELECTRIC VEHICLE" SHALL MEAN AN AUTOMOTIVE-TYPE VEHICLE FOR ON-ROAD USE, SUCH AS PASSENGER AUTOMOBILES, BUSES, TRUCKS, VANS, NEIGH- BORHOOD ELECTRIC VEHICLES, AND ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES, POWERED BY AN ELEC- TRIC MOTOR THAT DRAWS CURRENT FROM A RECHARGEABLE STORAGE BATTERY, FUEL CELL, PHOTOVOLTAIC ARRAY, OR OTHER SOURCE OF ELECTRIC CURRENT WHICH IS CHARGED BY BEING PLUGGED INTO AN ELECTRICAL SOURCE. FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS SECTION, OFF-ROAD, SELF-PROPELLED ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SUCH AS INDUS- EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted.
