BILL NUMBER: S4286 SPONSOR: WALCZYK TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the correction law, in relation to the use of canines for contraband screening at certain correctional facilities PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This legislation would ensure that every Correctional Facility in New York with a minimum of one hundred inmates to have a drug sniffing canine. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 of the bill amends the Correction Law, to ensure that correc- tional facilities with at least one hundred inmates have a drug sniffing canine on site. Section 2 sets the effective date.

WALCZYK -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to the use of canines for contraband screening at certain correctional facilities THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 112 of the correction law is amended by adding a new subdivision 6 to read as follows: 6. THE COMMISSIONER SHALL ESTABLISH A CONTRABAND SCREENING PLAN WHICH SHALL INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO, THE USE OF A LEASHED AND CONTROLLED CANINE TRAINED TO DETECT ILLEGAL DRUGS AT EACH CORRECTIONAL FACILITY HOUSING ONE HUNDRED OR MORE INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS. § 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD07697-01-3
