BILL NUMBER: S759 SPONSOR: LIU TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to directing the chancel- lor of the New York city school district to establish a student fare program SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends the public authorities law by adding a new section 1266-1 to establish a student fare program to provide three free fares between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM on weekdays to K-12 students in New York City living half a mile or more away from their school Section 2 provides the effective date JUSTIFICATION: Some New York City Students are eligible for specific MetroCards from their school, which permits them to travel to & back from school & other

LIU -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to directing the chancel- lor of the New York city school district to establish a student fare program THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 2590-h of the education law is amended by adding a new subdivision 57 to read as follows: 57. NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF LAW TO THE CONTRARY, TO ESTABLISH, IN CONSULTATION WITH THE METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION AUTHORI- TY, A STUDENT FARE PROGRAM. SUCH PROGRAM SHALL PROVIDE THREE FREE FARES BETWEEN 5:00 A.M. AND 10:00 P.M. EACH WEEKDAY FOR EVERY STUDENT IN THE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT WHO ATTENDS KINDERGARTEN THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE AND WHO RESIDES A HALF MILE OR MORE FROM THE SCHOOL SUCH STUDENT ATTENDS. § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding the date on which it shall have become a law; provided, however, that the amendments to section 2590-h of the education law made by section one of this act shall not affect the expiration of such section and shall be deemed repealed therewith. Effective immediately, the addi- tion, amendment and/or repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for the implementation of this act on its effective date are authorized to be made and completed on or before such effective date.
