 Introduced  by  Sen.  THOMAS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
   printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules
 
 AN ACT to amend the veterans' services  law,  in  relation  to  defining
   veteran
 
   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

   Section 1. Subdivision 3 of section 1 of the veterans' services law is
 amended to read as follows:
   3. The term "veteran" means a person who served on active duty in  the
 uniformed  services  of  the  United  States,  or WHO SERVED in the army
 national guard, air national guard, NEW YORK GUARD  OR  NEW  YORK  NAVAL
 MILITIA  FOR  AT LEAST TWENTY YEARS OF SERVICE, PART OF WHICH WAS DURING
 ANY WAR OR PERIOD OF HOSTILITIES, or service as a  commissioned  officer
 in  the  public  health  service,  commissioned  officer of the national
 oceanic  and  atmospheric  administration  or   environmental   sciences
 services  administration,  cadet at a United States armed forces service
 academy, and who has been released from such service  under  other  than
 dishonorable conditions.
   § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
