BILL NUMBER: S9240 SPONSOR: CLEARE TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the public housing law, in relation to requiring braille labeling in dwellings in public housing projects in the state PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: The bill enhances accessibility and independence for visually impaired residents by mandating Braille labeling on room numbers, elevator buttons, and directional signage in public housing common areas state- wide. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 of the bill mandates all public housing projects in the state to include Braille labeling. on room numbers, elevator buttons, and directional signage in common areas. Section 2 sets an effective date.

CLEARE -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Housing, Construction and Community Development AN ACT to amend the public housing law, in relation to requiring braille labeling in dwellings in public housing projects in the state THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The public housing law is amended by adding a new section 223-c to read as follows: § 223-C. BRAILLE LABELING REQUIREMENT. ALL DWELLINGS IN PROJECTS LOCATED WITHIN THE STATE SHALL INCLUDE BRAILLE LABELING ON ALL ROOM NUMBERS, ELEVATOR BUTTONS, AND DIRECTIONAL SIGNAGE IN COMMON AREAS IN SUCH DWELLINGS. § 2. This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall have become a law. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD15355-01-4
