BILL NUMBER: S9465 SPONSOR: BROUK TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to developing guidelines to encouraging participation in apprenticeships and raising awareness in apprenticeship opportunities SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:. Section one directs the commissioner, in consultation with the depart- ment of labor and pupil personnel advocates, develop guidelines for use by high school guidance counselors in making students aware of appren- ticeship opportunities and encouraging student participation in appren- ticeships. Section two sets the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: Every year many jobs in New York go unfilled because of the lack of workers with the appropriate skills necessary to fill those jobs. BROUK -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to developing guidelines to encouraging participation in apprenticeships and raising awareness in apprenticeship opportunities THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 305 of the education law is amended by adding a new subdivision 62 to read as follows: 62. THE COMMISSIONER SHALL, IN CONSULTATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND PUPIL PERSONNEL ADVOCATES, DEVELOP GUIDELINES FOR USE BY HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELORS AND GUIDANCE COUNSELORS TO COORDINATE SERVICES WITH LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES OF NEW YORK STATE CERTIFIED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS FOR PURPOSES OF ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION IN APPRENTICESHIPS AND RAISING AWARENESS SURROUNDING APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES. SUCH GUIDELINES SHALL BE MADE AVAILABLE ON THE DEPARTMENT'S WEBSITE AND SHALL BE UPDATED ANNUALLY. § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
