 Introduced  by  Sen.  MYRIE  -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
   printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules
 
 AN ACT to amend the election law, in relation to including  speakers  of
   Haitian Creole as language minorities
 
   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

   Section 1.  Subdivision 5-a of section 17-204 of the election law,  as
 added by chapter 226 of the laws of 2022, is amended to read as follows:
   5-a.  "Language minorities" or "language-minority group" means persons
 who are American Indian, Asian American, Alaskan  Natives,  SPEAKERS  OF
 HAITIAN  CREOLE,  or  of  Spanish  heritage.  "LANGUAGE  MINORITIES"  OR
 "LANGUAGE-MINORITY GROUP" SHALL ALSO MEAN PERSONS OF MIDDLE  EASTERN  OR
 NORTH  AFRICAN  HERITAGE  AS DEFINED BY THE FEDERAL OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT
 AND BUDGET'S STATISTICAL POLICY DIRECTIVE FIFTEEN.
   § 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
